Profiles by Cannabiz Social Podcast - Barry Davidson

In this week’s episode of “Profiles by Cannabiz Social”, we hear from Barry Davidson, Strategic Engagement at David Hyde & Associates.

Barry has been involved in several global business startups and working within the security and risk realm for the last 30 years. He’s always gravitated towards building new things.

The lure of a new industry attracted Barry, and has landed him at one of the preeminent firms, David Hyde & Associates. Barry coincidentally taught David (as in David Hyde) environmental criminology 20 years ago.

“We were acquired by Total Cannabis Security Systems (TCSS), and they are a seed-to-sale organization dedicated to building services for our clients that meet all five of the general areas that cannabis business anywhere in the world is going to require.”

David Hyde & Associates is one of the first entrants in to the security regulatory market working within the security realm of the regulatory process and into other business risks and strategy. The company has been responsible for touching on or assisting in over 70 applications of the more than 120 currently incensed medical cannabis production facilities across Canada.

Recently, an acquisition announcement was made that has Barry and the rest of the company excited. “We were acquired by Total Cannabis Security Systems (TCSS), and they are a seed-to-sale organization dedicated to building services for our clients that meet all five of the general areas that cannabis business anywhere in the world is going to require.”

TCSS stepped in and brought much-needed resources to help David Hyde & Associates grow, evolve, and bring the team forward to meet the demands of their clients and potential clients.

Barry is active in the online and public cannabis space and on social media. “For fear of sounding like a giddy teenager coming out of college, I have been reenergized stepping into this industry. The vast majority or the people are very committed to what it is they’re trying to build. The industry has such a strong foundation, emotional commitment and ethics, it is unlike almost any other industry I’ve worked within.”

Barry believes, federally and provincially, Canada has done things right around legalization. As he mentioned, it’s impossible to get government policy bang-on because it’s a human business and things change quickly.

“I’m quite happy with where Canada is at with legislation regulations, federally, because the learning is going to come now in the applications. I think the industry is ready.”

Within the cannabis industry, it’s regulated that there be security and background checks on employees. These organizations trust their staff like family.

Barry doesn’t believe legalization came too quickly. “I’m quite happy with where Canada is at with legislation regulations, federally, because the learning is going to come now in the applications. I think the industry is ready.”

Within Canada, the retail sector is different in each province. Alberta has put together a solid framework and set of regulations that is now being duplicated in other provinces who are willing to follow suit rather than develop their own.

Canada has not only created an industry, but we’ve created an industry that will be its own GDP line for us, and around the world it’s a model that western countries are looking at and may try to emulate. Canada should be very proud of this and continue to show how legal cannabis can create a solid, credible, ethical industry.

As for a prediction for industry, Barry said hang tight. The speed at which things are happening speaks to the business acumen of our industry leaders, and they’re managing to successfully navigate a path that’s yet to be paved. The expansion and foundation for the industry is going to continue.
